Also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, a gastric sleeve is a bariatric surgical option for patients with a BMI over 40. During a sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon creates a smaller stomach pouch–roughly the size of a banana–to minimize your caloric intake. Single Incision Laparoscopic Sleeve Surgery
Single Incision Laparoscopic Sleeve Surgery (SILS) is a newer laparoscopic surgical approach that is minimally invasive. This technique involves less scarring, less discomfort, and a shorter recovery time. Because of these benefits, it is quickly becoming a popular bariatric surgery option. Good candidates for this weight loss surgery have a BMI between 30 to 39.
Mini Gastric Bypass
Mini gastric bypass surgery is considered a restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss surgery. Similar to a traditional gastric bypass, a smaller stomach pouch is created to restrict how much you can eat, and the gastrointestinal tract is modified to restrict the calories your body is able to absorb. However, the intestines are only rerouted in one location instead of two. This weight loss surgery is best for patients with a BMI of 35 to 60.
Duodenal Switch
Similar to other restrictive and malabsorptive procedures, a duodenal switch is a weight loss surgery that involves removing a portion of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. A large portion of the intestine is bypassed to further reduce your caloric intake. The procedure also bypasses or removes more of the gastrointestinal tract than gastric bypass, reducing hunger-causing hormones. This form of weight loss surgery is intended for those who are severely overweight.
